Columbia says no evictions planned

Columbia University officials said at a City Council hearing yesterday
that no evictions would be needed as its campus expands north into
Harlem. But they left unclear whether the $7 billion expansion would
lead to eminent domain declarations against three commercial property
owners who are holding out. Former Mayor David Dinkins, a longtime
Columbia professor, said, “I want you to know that I have studied the
university’s Manhattanville proposal and am convinced that it can and
will be a good thing for both the university and its Harlem neighbors.”
The university also promised yesterday to preserve the famed Cotton
Club on 125th Street. more [NYDN] and more [Post]
