Children’s book stores in the city are surviving

The closings of children’s book stores nationwide are starting to level off, and stores in the city are keeping their doors open, including Bank Street Bookstore on the Upper West Side and the Scholastic Store in Soho. Children’s bookstores are one of the few growth areas in the book industry, according to the Association of Bookstores for Children, in part due to the popularity of Harry Potter. The Association of Bookstores for Children says there were about 750 children’s bookstores nationwide in the early 1990s, and less than a quarter of them are still open today.
