Couple evicts low-rent tenants to make way for mansion

The “hipster landlords” of an eight-unit residential building at 533 Bergen Street in Prospect Heights plan to remodel it as a 20-room private residence and have forced out four rent-stabilized tenants under a law that allows property owners to evict rent-stabilized tenants if the owners plan to move in. Three tenants paying higher rent remain in the building, but the landlords have begun eviction proceedings against the one remaining long-time rent-stabilized tenant, who pays $402 a month. Her apartment, where she lives with her son and nieces, is slated to become a storage room for bicycles and strollers, and a playroom for the landlords’ children.
