East Village landmark gets green technology

NY1’s Tara Lynn Wagner recently toured the landmark DeVinne Press Building, where two microturbines, power generators that reuse their heat to generate energy, have been installed. The building, at 393-399 Lafayette Street at East 4th Street, is home to Astor Wines and Spirits. The turbines generate power for half the structure, and use what energy is left to heat and cool the ground-floor wine store and food and wine educational rooms upstairs in the building. Corey Glick, president of RSP Systems, said the microturbines cut about $60,000 per year from the building’s electricity bill. While new buildings in the city are starting to use green technology, Yetsuh Frank of the U.S. Buildings Council of New York said that the real challenge in the city is making existing buildings more energy efficient.
