Brooklyn BID to present Flatbush plan tonight

The North Flatbush Business Improvement District group will present a plan tonight at their annual meeting to transform Flatbush Avenue into a more “people friendly” location. Using grants from the city, the group has hired Manhattan-based W Architecture and Landscape Architecture to implement improvements that would make the highway safer for pedestrians and calm cross-Flatbush traffic. Plans include narrowing side streets to install plants and turning the triangle-shaped parks into seating areas. Sharon Davidson, executive director of the BID, said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has pledged $200,000 for the project, bringing the group’s cash-on-hand up to $600,000, which was amassed through previous grants. Flatbush Avenue is Brooklyn’s oldest thoroughfare and hasn’t been improved since the 1970s.
