Park Slope residents say no to townhouses

Park Slope residents are angry over developer Ashwin Verma’s request to build three four-story townhouses in addition to the five-story, 17-unit apartment building originally planned for his Carroll Street site. After excavation work early last year damaged 10 homes in the neighborhood, residents are hesitant to approve the modern-looking townhouses, which would violate existing zoning laws, and neighbors say it would be out of scale with the traditional brownstones in the neighborhoods. However, the developer says the additions are necessary to recoup the money he lost when a Consolidated Edison substation was discovered under the site and the budget was thrown off. The board held a hearing on the additions yesterday and will likely vote on the issue in the fall. [NYDN]
