State Senate delays vote on mass evictions bill

The state Senate failed to vote on a new so-called “mass evictions” bill
last week, squelching hope for proponents who want to limit landlords’
ability to take units from their tenants without cause. Under the current
law, landlords are permitted to take one or more apartments in a building
for personal use, leaving tenants vulnerable to sudden and unprovoked
eviction, proponents say. State Senator Daniel Squadron, the bill’s key
sponsor, said that the current law puts tenants at a disadvantage. “It’s a
loophole that’s unfair, irrational and threatens our affordable housing
stock,” Squadron said. “This is a common-sense update to the law that will
assure that tenants don’t have to live in fear.”
