Storage garage won’t be on UES: Sanitation Dept.

A deal has been struck between the Department of Sanitation and the site’s developer over bringing an 800,000-square-foot hospital and educational facility to A Former East 73rd Street Department of Sanitation incinerator, DNAinfo reported. It will provide the Department of Sanitation with another garage where they can keep trucks, street sweepers and snow plows for use in Gramercy, Murray Hill and the Upper East Side.

Following the demolition of the incinerator at 525 East 73rd Street, right on the FDR, Department of Sanitation had hoped to erect a new garage for storage. However, DNAinfo wrote, budget constraints delayed the project, so the department found other ways to fund the project.

According to DNAinfo, the negotiations between Department of Sanitation and the developer continue. When they finish, the name of the developer will be released. Daniel Klein, director of Department of Sanitation’s office of real estate, told Manhattan Community Board 8, which covers the Upper East Side, that the new garage will not be located in the Upper East Side. This comes amid neighborhood opposition to the rebuilding of the East 91st Street waste transfer station.

“It will not be in [the Upper East Side’s] District 8,” said Klein to the community board. “You can take from that what you will.”

Though DNAinfo mentioned no specifics to this claim, they wrote that Klein hinted at bringing the garage to Community Board 6, which covers 14th to 59th streets from the East River to Lexington Avenue,Plus Madison Avenue between 34th and 40th streets.

“We have not been informed about any possible locations in Community Board 6,” CB6 Chairman Mark Thompson told DNAinfo. [DNAinfo]
