The embattled New York City Housing Authority will receive an additional $58 million in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s final budget, DNAinfo reported.

The money will be used to prevent the closure of authority-run senior centers and community programs. The funds should blunt the impact of a $205.5 million deficiency in the NYCHA’s budget, which is due to federal budget cuts, DNAinfo said.

The mayor also designated $250 million for improved storm protection measures on eastern Staten Island, due to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation last October, DNAinfo said.

City libraries are also beneficiaries of some extra cash: $106 million was allocated in the final budget to keep all branches open. [DNAinfo]Zachary Kussin
