Goodbye Gershwin! Composer’s cousin unloads family’s second condo at 25 Central Park West: PHOTOS

Are the descendants of George Gershwin abandoning Central Park West? Two months ago, relatives of the renowned composer sold their apartment at the Century Condominium, a twin-towered Art Deco building at No. 25. Now, another Gershwin has unloaded her condominium at the same address to an Australian politician.

Nancy Gershwin, who appears to be a cousin of George and Ira, is a writer and director who lives in Beverly Hills, though she grew up in New York City, according to a website commemorating one of the composers’ now-demolished properties in Los Angeles.

Gershwin sold her one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit for $1.55 million, city property records filed Tuesday show. She had listed it for $1.6 million in late May with W. Doug McCullough of Stribling & Associates, according to StreetEasy. The apartment went into contract on June 20 and the sale closed July 30, records show.

Lucinda Hughes Turnbull, who was Sydney’s mayor from 2003 to 2004, is the buyer, records show. Her attorney, Paul Giddins of Giddins Claman, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nancy had been renting out the home, McCullough said via email, and it was asking $4,600 a month, StreetEasy shows. She owned the place for more than 20 years, McCullough said, though public records of the purchase were not available. He declined to comment further, citing privacy concerns.

The condo includes white marble floors, a fireplace and a soaking tub.

The Gershwins, meanwhile, have a long history at 25 Central Park West. Michele Gershwin, a broker at Akam Sales & Brokerage, and the wife of George’s great nephew Todd, listed a three-bedroom unit in the building in February, as The Real Deal previously reported.

The owner of the 2,002-square-foot property was the estate of Judy Gershwin, the widow of George’s brother, Arthur, who was also a composer and stockbroker. Judy had passed away weeks before Michele listed the apartment for $4.65 million, she previously told The Real Deal. The Gershwins had owned that apartment for over 70 years.

That apartment sold for $4.53 million in May to a New York-based couple, records show.

It is unclear how Nancy is related to Todd and Michele, who said she was unaware that Nancy owned in the building.

George, who died in 1937, is known for composing the musicals “Funny Face,” “Strike Up the Band,” and “Girl Crazy,” along with several other classical tunes like “Rhapsody in Blue,” with his brother and partner, Ira, who died in 1983.

The Century opened in 1932 on the former site of the historic Century Theater. The 32-story, 411-unit building became part of the Central Park West historic district in 1985.
