Weinberg plans 8-story building to replace Chelsea art gallery

New structure will include office and gallery space

Weinberg Properties plans to replace a single-story art gallery in Chelsea with an eight-story building comprised of a mix of office and gallery space, according to city records.

The developer has owned 534 West 25th Street — now the home of Pace Gallery — since at least 1971, according to property records. The new building, between 10th and 11th avenues, will span 48,761 square feet and will feature office and gallery space on each of its eight floors. The first floor will also have a library, according to the permit application filed on Friday. Enrico Bonetti of Architekturkonzeption is the architect of record listed for the project.

A representative for Weinberg wasn’t immediately available to discuss the project.

Pace Gallery, which was founded in 1960, has four locations in the city and ten worldwide, according to its website. It was not immediately clear if the West 25th Street location will relocate. Pace shares the block with a ton of other art galleries, including one of its other locations at 508 West 25th Street. A representative for Pace was not immediately available to comment on Weinberg’s plans for the property.
