40% of Manhattan's buildings don't meet current zoning standards

New York City’s zoning code was the first in the country, and it’s changed many times since it was first approved in 1916. This means that there thousands of buildings in the city that no longer comply with the city’s zoning.

In fact, 40 percent of the buildings in Manhattan could not legally be built today. The violations range from excessive height, to the amount of the plot covered, to the number of apartments squeezed into the building. Among those that violate current zoning laws are some of the city’s most iconic buildings, so we compiled our top five.
