VIDEO: Here’s a closer look at the firm designing Obama’s presidential library

Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects beat out six other firms for the job

Following a years-long search, the Obama Foundation has chosen Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects to the lead the design team for the Obama Presidential Library in Chicago. The husband-and-wife duo, which beat out New York-based firms like SHoP Architects and Snøhetta, will collaborate with Chicago-based Interactive Design Architects on the $500 million project, which is expected to open by 2021.

According to a post on the Obama Foundation’s website, TWBSA “stood out in their commitment to explore the best ways of creating an innovative center for action that inspires communities and individuals to take on our biggest challenges.”

The two began their firm in 1986, and are best known for the Cranbrook Natatorium in Michigan, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia and the American Museum of Folk Art in New York City, which was demolished in 2014 to make way for a new MoMA expansion.
