Whole Foods Market, which is constructing a 68,000-square-foot store in Gowanus, is rejecting a petition generated by community members that asks the retailer to tweak facets of its construction plan. The petition called for Whole Foods to reduce the size of its planned 420-space parking garage and build a green roof on the store. The under-construction grocery store at 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn is also the subject of intense criticism because some community members say the company’s plans to clean up the site, which is known to have toxic pollutants, will fail to fully decontaminate the property and will possibly cause new environmental hazards. more [Gowanus Lounge]
