The Landmarks Preservation Commission is expected to vote to landmark 472 buildings in Crown Heights today. It is the first step in a three-part landmarking process for the neighborhood that will likely result in around 1,800 buildings being landmarked. All of the LPC’s proposed landmarkings will occur in northern Crown Heights, which is known for its stately townhouses. The neighborhood, long associated with racial strife between its black residents and Orthodox Jewish population, is in essence two neighborhoods: The landmarking is set to hit the northern section, which is predominantly African-American and West Indian. more [NYT]
