The Strand Bookstore turns 80 years old tomorrow. The store is the only surviving bookseller in an area–Fourth Avenue from Astor Place to Union Square–that used to be known as Book Row. The Strand’s owner, Fred Bass, says his business is doing well despite the advent of online book sales. “People like to handle and see books, no matter how much material you put online,” says Bass. “They want the experience of coming into the store. Plus it’s a great place to pick someone up.” more [Daily Intel]
