A lawsuit filed by East Harlem residents yesterday seeks to annul a deal made between the Parks Dept. and 20 Manhattan private schools. The deal grants the schools nearly exclusive rights to use public sports fields on Randall’s Island during after-school hours. In exchange, the schools have pledged to give the city $52.4 million in funding for the development of new fields and the renovation of existing ones. The plaintiffs, who are parents of public school students, argue that the decision was not reviewed by the local community board, the City Council and the borough president, as required by Uniform Land Use Review Procedure statutes. more [NYT]
