Stein assistant arrested

The Manhattan district attorney’s office expects to charge the personal assistant of Linda Stein with her murder this evening, as new details about the celebrity broker’s relationship with her assistant emerged.

Stein, 62, was killed October 30 in her 18th-floor penthouse apartment at 965 Fifth Avenue, between 77th and 78th streets. Police found her lying face down in a pool of blood.

A confrontation between Stein and her assistant, Natavia Lowery, 26, erupted that night, and Stein made racist remarks before Lowery, an African American, struck her with a metal bar, that she found in Stein’s apartment, a law enforcement source said.

Police arrested Lowery in Virginia this morning.

Lowery worked for Stein, an agent for Prudential Douglas Elliman, for only a few months after she was hired through a temp agency, the source said.

“She is hell on wheels and she treats menials poorly,” the source said about Stein. “It was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Before she got into the real estate business, Stein co-managed the Ramones, the famous punk rock band. She and her husband of nine years, Seymour Stein, had two daughters, Mandy Stein and Samantha Stein Wells, who has a three-year-old daughter.

Long-time friend Hall Willkie, president of Brown Harris Stevens, painted a different picture of Stein, a breast cancer survivor.

“She was a very strong broker and a wonderful person,” Willkie said.
