New York City has taken the seven-acre South Brother Island, part of a $2 million deal brokered by the Trust for Public Land with federal money. The undeveloped island, which lies off Hunts Point between Queens and the Bronx, was the last privately-owned property in the East River of any significant size. “It’s one of the few places of untrammeled nature left in the whole city,” said Susan Clark, director of public affairs for the Trust for Public Land, which is facilitating the deed transfer. “It’s really just good luck it’s been saved.” more [NYT] and more [AMNY]
