New York City’s male-dominated construction industry has added more women since 2005 than at any other time. According to the United States Census Bureau, the share of female construction workers in the city jumped from 2.2 percent two years ago to about 3 percent today. The New York City District Council of Carpenters has 2,000 apprentices, of which 14 percent are women. Nontraditional Employment for Women, offers a free six-week training program, has placed 158 women in building trades apprenticeships this year, up from 139 in 2006 and fewer than 50 in 2000.
