City Council to hear Willets Point arguments

The City Council will hear arguments today on whether businesses in Willets Point, near the new Mets Stadium in Queens, must be moved to make way for a massive redevelopment. Owners of the mostly automotive businesses say the area is blighted because the city has refused to pave the streets or install street lights and sewers. The city wants to rezone the area from industrial to mixed-use to plan for 5,000 housing units, a 400,000-square foot convention center, a 700-room hotel, a school, retail and office space and a park. Councilwoman Melinda Katz, chair of the Land Use Committee, received nearly $30,000 from four donors tied to businesses fighting the redevelopment. more [AMNY] and more [Sun] and more [Post]
