State could seize land for Brooklyn park

A long-planned 28-acre park along the north Brooklyn waterfront could move ahead if the state Legislature passes a bill allowing the state to take land owned by a power company by eminent domain. Critics of TransGas Energy say it keeps revamping plans for a power plant to evade the city’s efforts to acquire its eight-acre property. “This is an appropriate use of eminent domain. We’re not taking people’s houses. We’re not trying to aid a private developer,” said Assemblyman Joe Lentol of Greenpoint, the bill’s sponsor. “TransGas has been very clever in trying to put off what has been recommended long ago.” The city has taken two properties for the Bushwick Inlet Park, as The Real Deal reported last month.
