Calls grow for more Queens landmarks

A coalition of civic groups meets in Queens tonight to work for more landmarking in the borough, where landmarks number less than 20 percent of Manhattan’s. Preservationists say that until recently Queens has been ignored. The Landmarks Preservation Commission has taken notice lately though. Sunnyside Gardens, a planned community, was designated a historic district last year. And the Jamaica Savings Bank and Congregation Tifereth Israel in Corona were both named landmarks this month.
