Willets Point property owners suing city

Property owners and other opponents of the city’s $3 billion Willets Point redevelopment are suing the city. The Willets Point Industry and Realty Association and 10 large property owners have retained Michael Gerrard, an environmental lawyer, to pursue the lawsuit. Gerrard represented CableVision in thwarting Bloomberg’s attempt to build a stadium at the West Side Rail Yards. They claim in a press release that the city “has planned to rezone and redevelop for many years and has been waging a campaign of intentional neglect to create and perpetuate an eyesore for the eventual justification of the use of Eminent Domain.” They claim that the so-called Iron Triangle has 250 businesses with 3,000 skilled workers who will be displaced by the city’s plan to turn the 60-acre area into a mixed-use community, next to Citi Field, the new Mets stadium. The opponents protested outside the Mets’ home opener yesterday at Shea Stadium. TRD
