Jim Mamary and Alan Harding opened the bistro Patois on Brooklyn’s Smith Street 11 years ago, when the then-low rent block was lined with drug dealers and gangs. The team has now opened over a dozen restaurants around Brooklyn, and although they were once congratulated for bringing better restaurants to the borough, Carroll Gardens residents scorn them for becoming a chain.
