Harlem broker in legal tangles

Only last week, Harlem broker Willie Kathryn Suggs was profiled by New York magazine, which dubbed her “the most successful and reviled Harlem broker.” Now she is caught up in a legal tangle with a longtime friend and lawyer Christina Burks Lee. Suggs was fined $2,000 in 2006 for violating broker laws when she filed a mechanics lien for almost $9,000 against co-op shares sold by Lee and her son. Brokers are prohibited from filing such liens and Lee had no written agreement to sell the property. Suggs could have lost her license over the deal, but claimed that she had mistakenly believed the lien was appropriate after confusing it with a “previous, unrelated transaction.”
