Preservationist Margot Gayle passed away yesterday at 100 years old. Gayle was involved in saving the Jefferson Market Courthouse, now the Jefferson Market Library, on Sixth Avenue at 10th Street, from being demolished in the 1960s. She was also influential in establishing the Soho Cast-Iron Historic District, a 26-block area of Soho, which was made a national historic district in 1978. Gayle wrote several books, including “Cast-Iron Architecture in New York: A Photographic Survey” and “Metals in America’s Historic Buildings, Uses and Preservation Treatments” and was one of the founders of the Victorian Society in America.
