Brooklyn House of Detention project paused

After being hit with a restraining order yesterday, the city’s budget crisis will also delay the reopening of the Brooklyn House of Detention in Downtown Brooklyn. The project is estimated to cost $430 million, and the Department of Corrections has put the project on hold, at least until it is further discussed with the community. City officials agreed yesterday to limit the number of inmates currently there and will not proceed with an architecture contract to design the expanded facility until December 8, when settlement talks are scheduled.
