More New York City stores, restaurants and other buildings have announced closures this week. City Cricket, at 555 Hudson Street, will close its doors March 1 after eight years in business. La Goulue, a restaurant at 746 Madison Avenue, will close April 5. Femmegems, a jewelry store at 280 Mulberry Street, will close that location on February 15 but plans to move to Chelsea. The John Heuss House, a 24-hour homeless service center at 42 Beaver Street, will close at the end of June after losing its funding from the city. The Catholic Center at New York University has been boarded up, and the Department of Buildings has issued preliminary permits for demolition at the site. In Brooklyn, Zaida’s House of Beauty Salon, which has occupied its location at 178 Smith Street for 18 years, will close next week because rents have become unaffordable for the salon. Journey Home, a home furnishings store at 166 Water Street, is closing at the end of the month because foot traffic has declined. Love =?, at 162 Fifth Avenue, is closing. Several businesses on Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, including Next Level Floral and the Purple Pumpkin, have also closed recently. On a larger scale, Starbucks said this week that it would close 300 stores nationwide and begin selling instant coffee. TRD
