Yankees owe city back rent, audit says

The Yankees owe the city more than $65,000 in back rent payments for the first quarter of 2008, according to an audit released today by Comptroller William Thompson’s office. Since 2000, the baseball team has overstated its rent deductions by more than $3.7 million, Thompson said, and in the past has not paid the city until being audited. The Yankees are planning to pay, and the audit is part of the team’s compliance with its lease, Randy Levine, the team’s president, told NY1. Under the city’s lease agreement with the Yankees, the team is responsible for the care and upkeep of the stadium and must pay rent to the city. TRD
