Gowanus Canal could become Superfund site

The Environmental Protection Agency wants to add the Gowanus Canal to the Superfund’s National Priorities List, which would allow the EPA to investigate the contamination at the 1.8-mile site. But Buddy Scotto, a Carroll Gardens activist, said the site was already clean enough for development near the canal to go ahead, and a Superfund designation would only slow development. Toll Brothers plans to build a 577-unit residential development near the canal, near Bond, Carroll and Second streets.
