Markowitz’s amphitheater plan criticized

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz wants to build a $64 million amphitheater across from two synagogues on Coney Island, but a city law that bans amplified sound during religious services could prevent concerts from being held on Friday and Saturday. Opponents of the proposed open-air space in Asser Levy Park hope the legal issue will derail the arena plans, since Friday and Saturday are the biggest moneymaking nights for concert spaces. Officials from the two synagogues said they would oppose concerts being held at the arena on Friday and Saturday nights and on other Jewish holidays. Markowitz has said the project will be sensitive to the community’s concerns.
