DOB secures falling window panes at Midtown building

The Department of Buildings has had to secure panes of glass at 325 Fifth Avenue, citing safety concerns. The high-end condominium building — which sold units priced as high as $3 million — between 32nd and 33rd streets suddenly began shedding entire panes of glass from its 42-story sides, nearly striking pedestrians as they shattered on the nearby sidewalks. Department of Buildings officials barred residents from their balconies until further notice, and scaffolding has been installed to protect passersby. Despite complaints from residents, a Department of Buildings spokesperson said that all 1,300 glass panels on the building would remain wrapped in protective mesh until they could be secured.
