Bronx officials grapple with affordable housing scam

City officials are trying to gauge the extent of a fraudulent affordable housing scheme that caused approximately two dozen people in the Bronx and upper Manhattan to lose thousands of dollars. The suspect, Josie Almonte, allegedly promised to help victims use Section 8 vouchers to rent apartments. The victims say that after Almonte collected their money, they learned that no such apartments existed. Although several victims have come forward, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz said that his office hasn’t yet established the full scale of the fraud. “Though we have heard from some of the victims of this scam, we are concerned that more individuals who have been affected by this fraud may be out there,” Diaz said. “We urge them to come forward and seek our help.”
