The Downtown Alliance has completed a $400,000 study into possible renovations for the Greenwich Street South neighborhood in the Financial District. Development ideas include new parks and pedestrian space; all told, the group hopes that the project will yield between 6.5 million and 8.3 million square feet of development. The neighborhood, which sits immediately south of the World Trade Center, got its name from a speech made by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002, in which Bloomberg said that a residential neighborhood should be built there. But so far, according to Liz Berger, president of the Downtown Alliance, the neighborhood is largely undeveloped and unpleasant to visit. “People crossing [into the neighborhood] — it’s just not a positive experience,” Berger said. The Downtown Alliance’s study is now on display in Zuccotti Park.
