Queens nabe up for historic status

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted yesterday to hold a March 23 public hearing on transforming the east Queens neighborhood of Addisleigh Park into an historic district. The neighborhood is noted for the large number of culturally and politically influential African-Americans who one lived there, including Jackie Robinson, W.E.B. DuBois, John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald. While the vote yesterday was just the first step in the landmark status approval process, Addisleigh would become the ninth historic district in Queens if approved. Commission Chairman Robert Tierney said that he felt strongly about landmarking the neighborhood. “I’m proud to put this extraordinary community on the path to historic designation,” Tierney said.
