Carroll Gardens landmarking finds new opponents

While historic preservationists in New York City have long butted heads with developers, they’ve found new opponents among anti-gentrification advocates, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Neighborhood advocacy group Citizens Against Landmarks formed to combat the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s possible extension of the Carroll Gardens Historic District, a move that founding member John Esposito said would only hasten gentrification in the area. “They just want to re-gentrify and force out whatever elements from the past are left,” Esposito said, adding that support from City Council member Brad Lander is misguided. “His constituents aren’t just upper class, they’re the people who built this neighborhood,” Esposito said. “They just want to force [us] out.”
