NYC real estate industry hiring again

The city’s real estate industry added 300 jobs in February, piggybacking on an additional 700 jobs in January, according to a new employment report from Eastern Consolidated. Since the industry’s peak in August 2008, 2,000 real estate employees have lost their jobs in New York City. But while real estate, which is defined as brokerage firms, leasing agencies and management companies, has largely stemmed its tide of unemployment, the construction industry has continued to take a pounding, which the report attributes to the city’s the vast number of stalled projects. There were 2,400 city construction workers who lost their jobs in February, a 16.8 percent decline, bringing the total since the industry’s August 2008 peak to 22,500.
