With development rebound far off, design firms shift focus

Although the market appears to be picking up for New York City brokerages, many architecture and design firms are still barely holding their heads above water. Recovery for the design industry seems far off with close to 500 stalled projects across the city, scant financing available for new private construction and the city and state governments scaling back public projects amid budget cuts. For many architecture firms, the last best hopes lie in transportation projects, public housing and overseas work and they’re competing to get those jobs, according to Crain’s. “If it weren’t for public investments in infrastructure and construction, this industry would be in free-fall,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America.
