Ray’s Candy Store renews lease

Ray’s Candy Store, at 113 Avenue A in the East Village, has renewed its lease for a three-year period, EV Grieve reported. The store — a fixture in the neighborhood with its 24-hour operation — had previously had a month-to-month lease arrangement after the landlord issued an ultimatum to owner Ray Alvarez. Alvarez fell behind on his $3,700-per-month rent and almost got evicted by his landlord, Barbara Chupa. Chupa has long been concerned that Alvarez’s method for making his signature Belgian fries is a fire hazard and she agreed to let Alvarez stay on the lease if he promised to take fries off the menu and pay an extra $200 each year, Gothamist reported last week.
