Harlem church invests in condos

Abyssinian Baptist Church

An activist church in Harlem has turned its attention toward residential real estate development, as part of an effort to improve its neighborhood, according to the Wall Street Journal. Abyssinian Development — an offshoot of The Abyssinian Baptist Church On 138th Street between Lenox Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard — is currently marketing two condominiums adjacent to the church, with a combined total of 32 units. The developments, which include 10 subsidized units between them, have apartments priced up to $970,000, according to Sheena Wright, president of Abyssinian Development. “We married the real estate investment with the investment in human and social capital,” Wright explained of her company.
