The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in the Fordham section of the Bronx

The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in the Fordham section of the Bronx, where the legendary poet wrote “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Annabel Lee,” is on its way to a $2 million endowment, thanks to a new push by the non-profit that operates it. According to the Daily News, the Bronx County Historical Society has already raised $20,000 for a fund that would help the group keep up with the $300,000-a-year operating expenses for the city-owned property, closed since August for a $1 million restoration that’s slated to take between six and nine months. As it stands, city pays roughly 40 percent of the operating expenses for the cottage, while the society, funded through donations and government grants, pays the rest. The property, at East Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse, is on the National Register of Historic Places. [NYDN]
