Atlantic City rolls out tourist district plan

A bill to create an Atlantic City tourism district was approved by the New Jersey state legislature this week, according to the Wall Street Journal. The designation is aimed at boosting retail and tourism activity in Atlantic City’s downtown neighborhood, as well as its boardwalk. But while the bill gives the state the power to make zoning changes to enhance pedestrian traffic and to demolish blighted buildings, some developers and retailers are wary of the planned tourism zone. Danielle Babcock, director of marketing for shopping outlet manager Cordish, said her company will need tangible results before it leaps into a new Atlantic City project. “A dedicated tourist district has merit, but exactly how it should be orchestrated we have not studied,” Babcock said.
