Mexican immigrants face worst housing conditions in city: study

Mexican immigrants experience worse housing conditions than any other group in the city, according to a Community Service Society study reported by the New York Times. About 43 percent of Mexican immigrants in the city live in overcrowded households, and more than 35 percent spend more than half their income on rent. By comparison, 15 percent of all immigrant households and 9 percent of all households are overcrowded, and rent swallows more than half of all income for 26 percent of immigrant households and 24 percent of all households in the city. Among the other findings from the study: Dominican immigrants inhabit more rent-controlled housing by percentage (61 percent) than any other group, while European immigrant homes are the most likely to be owner-occupied (47 percent).
