Large East Village swath up for landmarking

The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission may bestow an historic designation on nearly 300 tenement buildings and rowhouses in the East Village, DNAinfo reported. The blocks under consideration are bounded by East 2nd and East 7th streets, between First Avenue and the Bowery, plus 10th Street on the northern edge of Tompkins Square Park. Many of the buildings there are 19th-century residences or institutional buildings that had played significant roles in the lives of immigrants during that time period. Among the 27 individual buildings already landmarked in the area are Webster Hall on East 11th Street and the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club Building On East 4th Street. This would be only the second historic district for the East Village; the other is the St. Mark’s Historic District, which contains 38 buildings. A meeting for property owners to discuss the proposed designation has been scheduled for April 26. [DNAinfo]
