Architects hope their Shelter Island home inspires similar projects

Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat, partners of New York-based Stamberg-Aferiat Architecture, show off a Shelter Island home they designed for themselves last year on Plum TV (see video above). The exterior is colorful, oddly shaped, and probably unlike anything you’ve seen before. Stamberg and Aferiat say the multiwall polycarbonate gives great interior lighting, but the exterior is a mixed bag. “Half of the neighbors love the house,” Stamber said, “and half of the neighbors loathe the house.” But the architects designed the home for themselves, and hope it could be the basis for other similar projects in the future. Clients who might have been interested in such a space, but afraid of how it would turn out, now have a reference point. “We’re hoping somebody wants to give us the opportunity to explore this sort of architecture with them,” Aferiat said.
