Drug rehab center transformation in Tribeca nears completion

The first residents will be moving into a Tribeca condominium that has
been reimagined as a rehabilitation center, the New York Times reported. The
Tribeca Twelve project, at 283 West Broadway, between Canal and Lispenard Streets, is a collaboration between Hazelden, a Minnesota-based network of
rehab centers, and the Columbia University psychiatry department.

The building will be a sober residence for young adults, particularly
college students, recovering from substance abuse, with onsite clinic
and treatment programs.

When the building was purchased in 2005, the plan was to create condo
called Tribeca Five with apartments ranging from $2.4 million to
almost $3.8 million. But after the project ran into financial trouble,
Hazelden, which looked at 35 properties, ended up buying the building
last year for just under $8.3 million, with the properties still
needing extensive renovation. This month, five people
will be moving into the residences, which cost $5,000 to $5,500 a
month.

While the building, which will also house an outpatient clinic for 25
students, is in the midst of a busy nightlife area, the idea is that
residents will learn to see a more sober lifestyle as a viable alternative
even with drinking and drugging going on elsewhere in the neighborhood,
Hazelden said. [NYT]
