Brooklyn pol, community board slam condo plans

Brooklyn Council member Lew Fidler said Mill Basin would “accept nothing other than one- or two-family homes” on a plot of land where a developer intends to build a six-story condominium. Brooklyn Daily reported Mark Scharf presented plans to the local community board for a six-story, 84-unit condo with retail space for a restaurant near the intersection of Mill and Strickland avenues in southeastern Brooklyn.

Scharf’s attorney said the developer is dependent on the condo plan because it would cost him more than $1 million to decontaminate the property, which had been used for gun powder manufacturing and petroleum storage in the past. If he resorts to building single-family homes, the attorney said, there’s little chance for profit.

But Fidler and Community Board 18 members noted the property, at 2170 Mill Avenue, was rezoned 15 years ago to preserve the “character” of the community. “I think it would be the biggest eyesore I’ve ever seen,” said once community board member. [BK Daily]
