SL Green execs called most powerful people in NYC real estate

The leaders of the city’s largest office landlord, SL Green, ranked at the top of a list of the most powerful people in New York City real estate compiled by the New York Observer. The ranking was based on “access and influence,” or the ability to influence the outcome of potential projects and access people who can help push an agenda forward.

With that in mind, SL Green Realty CEO Marc Holliday and President Andrew Mathias shared the top spot as the most powerful people in New York City real estate. The Observer praised the duo as “the architect of too many ingenious deals to list,” including the joint venture purchase of 1552 Broadway.

Extell Development President Gary Barnett immediately followed them on the list, because he’s built more in recent years than any other developer. Governor Andrew Cuomo rounded out the top three, as he’s pushed Albany to fund the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s capital budget plan, rebuild the Tappan Zee Bridge and undertake an ambitious plan for a Queens convention center to replace the Javits Center.

Durst Organization cousins Douglas Durst and Jody Durst, who took home the top spot in last year’s rendition of the Observer’s list, fell to fifth this year. Vornado Realty Trust executives, including Steven Roth, and Related Companies executives, led by Stephen Ross, placed sixth and seventh on the list, respectively.

RXR Chairman Scott Rechler was named the fourth most powerful New York real estate figure, while CBRE Regional CEO Mary Ann Tighe, Jonathan Gray, head of Blackstone Group’s real estate division, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose rezoning efforts, the Observer said, will help reshape the city, rounded out the top 10.
