After closing on a $49.6 million loan, BRP Companies and the Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church will move forward with a Flushing, Queens, affordable housing project, Crain’s reported. The complex, dubbed Macedonia Plaza, will rise on the site of a Union Street municipal parking lot.

The site previously came under opposition from the community, who claimed the closing of the parking lot, located at 37-08 Union Street, would eliminate needed parking for local business and merchant clients who can’t always find street parking.

The housing development will rise 14 stories and will contain 143 units. It will include 6,287 square feet of retail, as well as 2,767 square feet of community space. Macedonia Plaza is part of the city’s New Housing Marketplace Plan, a project geared to spur and preserve development of subsidized housing, and is slated to be complete in the spring of 2014.

As previously reported, a project to upgrade Flushing’s Long Island Rail Road station at Main Street was put on the backburner to help Macedonia Plaza move ahead. [Crain's]
